Demographics

The association covers the 6 counties of the Northern Panhandle in West Virginia.  For Southern Baptists, West Virginia is an emerging state convention.  1.2 million or 7 out of every 10 West Virginians have no church of religious affiliation.  The Upper Ohio Valley Baptist Association has -

- 12 Churches

-   6 Missions

The Population of the 6 counties served by the UOVBA is 166,150.  The unchurched population is over 80,000. Much of the region is culturally religious, with a strong Wesleyan, Church of Christ, and Roman Catholic influence.

The goal of the association is to start 25 new churches in the 6 county area.  This is based on the goal of the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists to have 1 church for every 2,000 unchurched persons. Unchurched is defined as those who have no religious affiliation.  Many of those who are considered churched are related to a faith group, but have never entered into a personal relationship with Christ.

Key cities in the area are Wheeling, Weirton, Moundsville, and New Martinsville.

Vision: The vision of the association is to equip churches through cooperation, training, planning and fellowship to become instruments of Christ for the purpose of evangelism and missions.

Purpose: The mission of the Upper Ohio Valley Baptist Association is to motivate, stimulate, equip, and assist Southern Baptist churches to recognize and fulfill their Christ given mission.

Wanted: Church Planters

Wanted: An experienced and proven church planter to continue a church plant in Wheeling, WV.  The church was started on August 31, 2008 and has steadily increased in attendance.  Currently the group is meeting in the upstairs of a Catholic church building that was closed down over ten years ago.  The rent is $50.00 a week of each time the facility is used.  This work is sponsored by Temple Baptist Church and Mike Watson, the Director of Missions for the Upper Ohio Valley is currently serving as pastor.  Long-term partners are also needed for this church plant.

Note: Among the first actions of the newly formed Southern Baptist Convention was to send a missionary to Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) to work among the river boat people and establish a work.  While several attempts have been made to establish a Southern Baptist Church in Wheeling, today, over 160 years later, Southern Baptists still do not have a constituted church in Wheeling.  Pray that God will raise up the church planter needed for this vital work (Luke 10:2).

Wanted: Church planter who will relate well with rural families within a five mile radius of Wileyville, WV.  Wileyville is a small town with over 300 households, a general store, a Church of Christ, fire station, and a auction house.  There are not SBC churches within a 15 mile radius of the town.  Based on survey work and demographics studies it was discovered that the area is unchurched with most not attending any church. The church planter will have to be self-funding and/or self-supporting.
